Jasper National Park

Jasper National Park, Banff National Park's northern neighbor, encompasses 10878 square kilometers of area in the Rocky Mountains. It was established in 1907 and includes beautiful lakes, waterfalls, mountains and glaciers. The Columbia Icefields, the largest chunk of ice in the Rocky Mountains, lies in the southern portion of the park. The glacier itself is 16 km wide and 24 km long and straddles the Great Divide between Alberta and British Columbia. The total area of the glaciers is 390 square kilometers, sometimes as deep as 900 metres. The town of Jasper is the only population centre within the park. Maligne Canyon

One of the most spectacular gorges in the Canadian Rockies, sheers limestone walls plunge to depths of over 50 metres(165 ft.). An interpretive trail winds its way from the picnic area across six bridges where you can catch the spray from the thundering Maligne River, or peer into the mossy detphs. Nearby, between the Fifth and Sixth bridges, are the Rock Gardens and the Boulder Gardens, Jasper's foremost climbing areas. In the winter, try your hand at a guided Canyon Tour across the floor of the frozen canyon. This is a sight you'll not want to miss ! Maligne Canyon

Athabasca Falls

The headwater comes from the Columbia Glacier about 70 kilometers south. Among the most powerful and breathtaking falls in the Rocky Mountains, The Athabasca River thunders through a narrow gorge where the walls have been smoothed and potholes are created by the sheer force of the rushing water carrying sand and rock. Columbia Icefields

The Largest icefield south of Alaska, shimmering glacial ice and snow cover some 389 sq. km. (233 sq. mi.). An exciting 55 minute Snowcoach Tour will take you out onto the Athabasca Glacier, a tongue of the Columbia Icefield, for an awe-inspiring glimpse of icy crevasses and ice-fed streamlets. Jasper Tramway

The Jasper Tramway whisks you up Whistlers Mountain to an elevation of 2285 metres for stunning vistas over mountain ranges stretching up to 80 km away. Interpretive exhibits explain the high alpine environment and a hiking trail leads you to the summit of the mountain. Guides are available for free on a regular time schedule, where they give you a full interpretive hike to the summit. On a clear day the white pyramid of Mt. Leduc #1 Interperative Center

The site of Leduc #1 Oilfield where oil was first discovered in Alberta, this provincial historic site features a conventional derrick, drilling, service and seismic rigs and an oilfield tank battery. The interpretive centre features geological displays, scale models and equipment.
